Damask Rose: The Oldest Toner We Know

Few botanicals have as long a history in skincare as the damask rose. Rosa damascena has been cultivated and distilled across Persia, the Middle East and India for many centuries, and rose water has been part of daily care in Indian homes for generations.

What a hydrosol is

When rose petals are steam-distilled, two things are collected: a tiny amount of essential oil, and a much larger volume of fragrant water. That water is the hydrosol. It carries the rose's water-soluble aromatic compounds along with trace amounts of its oil, which is why good rose water smells of the flower rather than of perfume.

A true hydrosol is gentle by nature. It is mostly water, and it sits naturally close to the skin's own mildly acidic pH, which is one reason Ayurveda has long used it as a daily toner.

What it offers skin

Rose water is used to refresh and tone the skin after cleansing, to add a light layer of hydration before serum or moisturiser, and simply for the sensory pleasure of it. Rose contains polyphenols with antioxidant properties, and many people find it calming on skin that feels warm or reactive.

Those are modest claims, and we are comfortable with modest. Rose water is not a treatment for any skin condition. It is a simple, pleasant, well-tolerated step that has earned its place over centuries.

Why we keep it simple

Our Damask Rose Water is a single-ingredient hydrosol, distilled from roses grown in Himachal's Kullu valley, with nothing added to disguise it. For us, that simplicity is the point.
