Sea Buckthorn: A Himalayan Berry for Changing Skin

A hardy shrub of the high Himalayas, and a bright orange oil that has become one of the most interesting botanicals in skincare. What it is, what it offers, and what it does not.

Sea buckthorn is a tough, thorny shrub that thrives where little else does: cold, dry, high-altitude slopes of the Himalayas and Central Asia. In late summer its branches are crowded with small, intensely orange berries. Communities in the mountains have used them for generations, in food, drink and folk remedies.

What is in the oil

Sea buckthorn oil is notable for its fatty acid profile. Alongside omega-3, 6 and 9, it contains palmitoleic acid, an omega-7 fatty acid that is also naturally present in human skin lipids and is relatively uncommon in plant oils. The berries are also rich in carotenoids, which give the oil its colour, and in tocopherols (forms of vitamin E).

What it offers skin

Because its fatty acids resemble those in the skin's own barrier, sea buckthorn oil is valued for helping skin feel supple and comfortable, particularly skin that is becoming drier with age. Its antioxidants help protect the oil itself and are part of why it is used in formulations for tired or uneven-looking skin.

We are careful not to go further than that. Sea buckthorn is not a cure for any skin condition, and we would rather describe it honestly than promise miracles.

Why it suits skin in midlife

As oestrogen declines in perimenopause and after, skin tends to produce fewer of its own lipids and to lose moisture more easily. A light oil that complements the skin's barrier, rather than sitting heavily on top of it, can make daily care feel more comfortable. That is the role sea buckthorn plays in our face oil serum, alongside babchi oil and Marvella Mitti.

Sourcing, and restraint

Sea buckthorn fits naturally within NTFDP: it is a fruit, harvested from a living shrub that fruits again the following year. And like every Himalyan Naturals formulation, the serum is developed using the Endo Neutral framework: respect the skin's own regulation, reduce avoidable interference, and support the conditions in which it can restore itself.

Sea buckthorn oil is deeply pigmented and can temporarily tint very fair skin or fabric. As with any new product, patch test first.
