Wild Apricot is the wild cousin of the farmed Apricot fruit. It is usually found in the higher reaches of the Himalayan forest, essentially above the altitude of 1900 mtrs or so. Nature has given the wild species, what we term as weeds, a special attribute. If you plant a tree, be it in its own native environment, the corresponding weed that grows around it, will have much stronger survival tendencies. It will take up the nutrition from the soil much strongly, more resistant to diseases and pests, and subsequently the fruit of such trees is also more potent, has better oil quantities and is naturally more equipped to ward off diseases. This is the plants/ trees own defense mechanism. When we as humans start to use these potent materials for our own protection, care and survival, we derive much stronger and far better results as compared to using the products from farmed trees and plants.
Himalayas are home to these Wild Apricot Trees, also known as Chillu in the higher reaches of Himachal and Uttarakhand. Our Wild Apricots come from both these states. It is then collected, dried and the seed of this fruit is then broken to reveal an almond like seed within this. This seed is saturated with the oil of this Wild Apricot. Nature put this oil, into this seed to nourish the sapling as it would emerge from the seed. This is the essential nutrition that will provide the young sapling to take root and ward off pests and diseases. Locals in the Himalayan hinterlands have used this oil as a medicine, as a moisturizer, simply stated as a go to thing for every common ailment of the human body, especially in the young children.
These seeds are ground in a traditional Oak-wood manual mill. On an average 7.5 kgs of this seed manually milled for 4 hours by 2 people will yield a liter of this oil. In some places, this is also done by water mills operated by flowing spring water. Nowadays, steel mechanical roller mills are also being employed, but the quality and purity is compromised this ways.
The remnant of this oil extraction is called Wild Apricot Seed Meal. This is the powder form left over from the oil extraction process. This is a unique product in itself. Traditionally, this was fed to the cattle, given in small quantities to small children. Young girls would wash their face with scrub, to de-tan and exfoliate their skin. We picked this product from the Himalayan hinterlands of Himachal and Uttarakhand.
